Vale Sidings Engineering Stages 3 & 4 Signalling Design

East West Rail is a nationally significant railway project which is currently being delivered by Atkins – SNC Lavin Group which aims to deliver much-needed transport connections for communities between Oxford and Cambridge by:

  • Upgrading an existing section of railway between Oxford & Bicester
  • Bringing back a section of railway between Bicester & Bletchley
  • Refurbishing existing railway between Bletchley & Bedford
  • Building brand new railway infrastructure between Bedford & Cambridge

Atkins called in the team at DigiSig Rail to assist in the production and verification of a selection of the Engineering Stage 3 and Stage 4 Signalling Design and Documentation for Vale Sidings at Bletchley.

Vale Sidings at Bletchley are owned by Network Rail and are located off the Down Vale Line between Bletchley Station & Fenny Stratford Station and are adjacent to Bletchley Train Maintenance Depot & the Civil Engineers Depot. All these various depots have a shared entrance and exit point.

Our Role

The project works involved were mainly associated with making sure that trains could safely enter and exit the sidings and that any new signalling systems put into place were all operationally consistent across each of the depots as they all shared a common entrance and exit.

DigiSig Rail were therefore responsible for producing the following Signalling Designs: –

  • Option Selection Report Aim: We reviewed the current signalling method in operation and the types of traffic in the area and then we detailed the signalling options for the proposed sidings.
  • Signalling Scheme Plan
  • TPWS Calculations and Braking Calculations
  • Signalling Design Specification
  • Permissive Working Risk Assessment
  • Trap Point & Derailment Risk Assessment
  • Interlocking Control Requirements
  • Interlocking Data Development plan

Keith Upton Atkins Senior Engineer (Signalling & Schemes)

Having communicated with the management team at DigiSig Rail I can confirm that I scored their work excellent in the following areas: Meeting with all the contractual requirements. Timeliness of responses to queries or phone calls. Commitment of the management team. Handling of any complaints or suggestions. Overall, we also received a good commitment and work performance level especially when the programme was extended and costs were tight at the end.
