My Journey Connor Hutchings – From Apprentice to Signalling Designer🚦
🎯 Finding My Path into Signalling Design
I started my journey in the rail industry in 2021 when I joined DigiSig Rail Group Ltd as an apprentice. Since then, I’ve grown into my current role as a Signalling Designer, gaining valuable hands-on experience along the way.
I chose signalling design because I wanted a career that combined technical problem-solving with real-world applications. The complexity of railway signalling intrigued me, & I knew this career would offer constant learning & development.
🔥 Learning & Overcoming Challenges
One of the best parts of my apprenticeship was the practical training. Learning by doing made a huge difference—it wasn’t just about theory but about applying knowledge in real scenarios.
One of the toughest skills to master was fault-finding techniques. Troubleshooting issues in signalling requires a sharp eye for detail, logical thinking, a& patience. Through hands-on training & guidance from experienced mentors, I developed this skill over time.
🤝 Mentors Who Made a Difference
I’ve been fortunate to have Russell Simpson & Michael Hickey as mentors. Their approach was a perfect balance of support & instructive criticism, helping me improve while also pushing me to think independently. They always made time to explain concepts, ensuring I fully understood the reasoning behind the work.
🏆 Career Milestones & Proud Moments
One of my biggest achievements so far has been achieving my Signalling Design Licence. It was a huge milestone, marking my transition from apprentice to a qualified designer.
Another defining moment was passing the IST course. It reinforced my confidence in my skills & confirmed that I was on the right track in my career.
💡 Advice for Future Apprentices
🚀 Ask for help—There are always people around willing to support you.
🔍 Pay attention to detail—In signalling, even the smallest mistake can have a big impact.
🔄 Be open to feedback—Constructive criticism helps you grow.
🚆 What’s Life Like Now?
As an apprentice, I needed a lot of guidance with my tasks. Now, I can undertake projects independently with minimal assistance, making key decisions & contributing to larger projects. The work remains dynamic and engaging, but now I have the confidence & experience to handle challenges on my own.
🔧 Why Choose an Apprenticeship in Signalling Design?
This apprenticeship has shaped my career by providing real-world experience, mentorship, & opportunities to develop technical skills. It has also helped me grow personally, improving my problem-solving abilities & independence.
For anyone considering an apprenticeship, my advice is simple: Go for it! The challenges will test you, but the experience & skills you gain will set you up for a rewarding career.
