🎯 Finding My Path into Signalling Design by Miles Wootton
Growing up, I knew people in the rail industry, which sparked my curiosity. During work experience at Network Rail, I was introduced to Signalling & Telecommunications (S&T), and that really solidified my interest.
After leaving sixth form, I looked for an apprenticeship and found this opportunity at @Digisig Rail. Since I’d studied design at school and had an interest in engineering, I knew it would be a great career choice—and I was right!
🔥 Learning on the Job & Overcoming Challenges
Starting my apprenticeship in June 2021, I quickly realised how much I enjoyed learning on the job. Applying lessons to real-world projects made everything click.
One of my biggest challenges was confidence, particularly speaking in meetings or presenting. I’d struggled with this in school, but thanks to workshops, training, and support from my team, I gradually improved. The key lesson? Preparation is everything. Nobody expects you to have all the answers immediately—planning ahead made a massive difference.
🤝 Mentors Who Made a Difference
I’ve been fortunate to learn from Michael Hickey & Russell Simpson. Seeing them every day meant that whenever I had a question or concern, they were always there to guide me. Their patience and willingness to explain things made a real impact on my development.
🏆 Career Milestones & Proud Moments
One of my biggest achievements was being a Finalist for The RailStaff Apprentice of the Year 2023—an incredible experience I’m really proud of.
Another defining moment was receiving my IRSE (Institution of Railway Signal Engineers) Signalling Design Licence. I had already seen it appear online, but holding the physical card in my hands made it feel real—proof that I had officially become a competent designer.
💡 Advice for Future Apprentices
🚀 Learn from everyone—even other apprentices. Everyone has unique experiences that can help you grow.
📚 Attention to detail is key—it’s frustrating when designs come back full of errors, but mistakes are part of learning.
🔄 Be resilient—balancing work, study, and assignments can be tough, but the rewards are worth it.
🚆 What’s Life Like Now?
With my IRSE licence, I now work on more complex projects, including principles design. One big difference? No more assignments or block release weeks! My focus is now on design work and CPD.
🔧 Why Choose an Apprenticeship in Signalling Design?
This apprenticeship has been a brilliant introduction to the rail industry. It’s allowed me to work on real projects, learn from experienced professionals, and build a career I genuinely enjoy.
