Alstom is advancing UK rail interlocking systems with its Smartlock 400 and newly developed Onvia Lock, aiming to support modern, efficient, and secure rail networks. The Smartlock 400, already undergoing trials at locations like Crewe, leverages IP-based communications to enhance reliability by integrating advanced diagnostics and reducing maintenance requirements. It is designed to offer seamless interoperability with both existing and newer rail infrastructure, ensuring minimal disruption to services and more sustainable maintenance over the long term.

The Onvia Lock line represents Alstom’s next generation of interlocking, engineered for the complexities of future rail networks. This system is highly adaptable and “cloud-ready,” meaning it can be deployed flexibly in both urban and high-capacity settings. Onvia Lock is also built to meet ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) and CBTC (Communications-Based Train Control) standards, enabling it to scale with growing demands and further support automated and remote monitoring across the network. With cybersecurity built into its framework, Onvia Lock aims to enhance resilience against potential digital threats while promoting increased train capacity and improved safety. Alstom’s focus on digital, modular solutions reflects a shift toward more comprehensive, integrated rail technology in the UK, designed to meet demands for higher reliability and sustainability in rail operations. Network Rail’s endorsement and trials of Smartlock 400 showcase the interest in these systems as effective responses to longstanding issues such as points failures and signalling reliability, aligning with broader goals for safer, smarter rail infrastructure across the UK. Well done Alstom 👏
