J Murphy and Sons will be replacing the central spans of Nazeing New Road Bridge in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire, from early January on behalf of Network Rail.
Being a major project there will be a four-month road closure and changes to various train services will come into force in the New Year as work gets underway to replace the bridge next to Broxbourne station.
The existing bridge sits over the West Anglia Main Line railway that carries trains between London and Hertfordshire, Essex and Cambridgeshire.
Despite remedial works and regular maintenance being done on the bridge between 2010 and 2014 the bridge unfortunately has continued to deteriorate and has now reached the end of its useful life.
The existing bridge will now be replaced with a new bridge which is being designed to have a life span of 120 years. The main works to remove the existing spans and install new ones will be carried out from 13th January to the 18th of January. Train services will also be suspended with rail replacement buses being organised by Greater Anglia. There will also be road closures and diversionary routes will be signposted over several months.
A temporary structure has been put in place so that gas, electricity and internet connections that run across the bridge can now be redirected over the temporary structure and continue supply.
Ellie Burrows, Network Rail’s route director for Anglia, said: “I’m sorry for the disruption that this work will cause to residents and rail users but if we don’t do this work now, it could lead to a much more disruptive closure at short notice.
“We’ve been working closely with community groups, local councils and schools to keep them informed of our plans and reduce the impact of the closure. Replacing the bridge will enable us to maintain a safe and reliable route for motorists, pedestrians and rail users for years to come.”
Jamie Burles, Greater Anglia managing director, added: “We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused while our trains are unable to run under the Nazeing New Road bridge and will be doing everything we can to help customers continue their journeys during this period.”
