Bam Nuttall and its project partners have just finished the railway works between Inverness and Aberdeen which was part of the £14M Inverness Airport Station programme.

The Inverness Airport train station programme has been on the drawing board for more than a decade.

It will be an additional stop on the line between the Highlands and Aberdeen, giving international travellers easy access to both Inverness and the Granite City.

Initial project works began on the £14m project in October 2021.

The Bam Nuttall team started the initial works on the 14th October and by the 26th October the railway line was reopened again. The team successfully worked on progressing the new station whilst delivering a 950m passing loop, effectively double tracking through the station.  Specialist engineers were also called in to install three sets of points whilst renewing 7km of rail adjacent to the site which meant using 10,000t of ballast and 2,900 sleepers.

The project also encompassed a new modular signalling system which saw the installation of 10 new signals and the use of signalling fibre cables. A whopping 30km of signalling cable and 7km of power cable was used during the works.

Bam Nuttall operations director for rail Nissar Mohammed said: “The work undertaken during the blockade was incredibly successful and we have made fantastic progress on the delivering this exciting new enhancement to the Scottish rail network.

“When complete the improvements will provide a quicker, more regular rail service between Inverness airport and the city centre, enhancing the lives of commuters and facilitating growth in the area.”

While the work could not be delivered while the railway remained operational, BAM Nuttall stated the activities were scheduled for this time to minimise the disruption to the travelling public.

Network Rail Scotland programme manager for the Inverness project Billy McKay said: “We are delighted that the work during the blockade has been successfully completed and that the line has been reopened for passengers.

“The volume of work delivered on site over the 11-day programme meant planning and coordination was key and I am delighted that the work was carried out safely and efficiently is credit to the skill and expertise of the contractors involved.

“Thank you to passengers for their patience during this work and hope that they begin to see and experience the benefits the investment in the railway is delivering.”
